Editor note
Hand-glazed ceramic tile in gold finish. Fabricated by Ceràmica Cumella, a four-generation ceramic workshop in Granollers, Barcelona. Material origin: mountains of eastern Spain; hand-glazed individually to achieve the gold register. Cumella's work sits at cultural-institution register — the same workshop produces ceramic elements for Gaudí's Sagrada Família and EMBT's Santa Caterina Market roof (4,500 m², 67 colours). LOEWE's commission of 35,536 hand-glazed tiles for Casa LOEWE Shanghai is the largest contemporary-retail deployment of the workshop's output. Three months on site to install. The gold-to-folded-leather material conversation does the architectural work — LOEWE's brand language of folded leather meets Jing'an Temple's two-minute-walk gilded roofs through a Barcelona ceramic workshop. The material carries three cultural arguments at once. To specify work at this register: Cumella commissions directly, and the conversation is about technique rather than spec. Project lead times typically 9-12 months. Not a material for programme-pressured fit-outs.
